Asahi Funakawa Park is located in Asahi Town, Toyama Prefecture. If you want to see beautiful cherry blossoms against a stunning landscape, this is the place to come. Spring is the season to visit, when the cherry trees bloom in a long row along the Funakawa River, with the Northern Japan Alps as a backdrop, creating a dreamlike scene. The cherry trees here are Yoshino cherries, about 250 trees lining an 800-meter stretch of riverbank. When they are in full bloom, they look like a tunnel of cherry blossoms; photos are lovely, but the sight is far more striking in person, with pink blossoms all around you. The cherry blossom festival usually runs from early to late April, with the blossoms at their peak in mid-April.
The cherry trees here are not original to the site. It was only in 1957, during improvement work on the Funakawa River, that local residents came together to plant Yoshino cherry trees along a stretch of over 280 meters. More trees were added over time, reaching the current total length of 800 meters. Cherry blossoms are not the only attraction; tulips bloom across the surrounding fields at the same time. At its peak in the past, there were as many as 30 tulip farms in the area. Fewer remain today, but the display is still just as lovely. The cherry trees grow around the tulip fields, with mountain scenery in the background, making it feel like spring at its very best.
