Asahiyama Zoo

Asahiyama Zoo

Asahiyama Zoo is located in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. It is a well-known zoo on the outskirts of Asahikawa. Its claim to fame is that visitors can view the animals from a variety of angles—something that sets it apart from other zoos.

One of the zoo's biggest highlights is the Penguin Glass Tunnel, which passes right through the penguins' pool, letting visitors get up close to them. Equally impressive is the Small Glass Dome, located in the middle of the polar bear and wolf enclosure, offering a close-up view of these animals that are otherwise hard to see. Winter is an especially great time to visit, when the zoo takes the penguins for a walk outside in the cold, much to visitors' delight. Beyond its excellent animal enclosures, the zoo also has exhibition zones featuring Hokkaido's native wildlife, such as deer, eagles, wolves, and cranes—including a crane species that is now endangered—along with animals from around the world such as polar bears, apes, big cats, and giraffes.
