Mount Aso

Mount Aso (阿蘇山, Asosan) is located in the heart of Kyushu, in Kumamoto Prefecture. Not only is it the best-known mountain in Kumamoto Prefecture, it is also one of the most famous in the Kyushu region and one of the largest volcanoes in the world. It is still an active volcano, with several craters at its summit. One of them is the Nakadake Crater, which is easy to reach by road. Before visiting, be sure to check the crater's status on the official website, as this is very important. If the volcanic gas levels are too high or there is a risk of eruption, access to the crater may be closed. Even when the crater is open, gas levels around it remain high, so people with respiratory conditions should avoid the area.

The area around Mount Aso has beautiful scenery, with small rural towns and rice fields scattered around its outskirts, giving it a genuine Japanese countryside atmosphere. Near the Nakadake Crater is Kusasenri, a vast grassy plain where cows and horses graze. From March to December, visitors can also enjoy horseback riding around the area. Further along is the Aso Volcano Museum. Besides the relaxing views, there are also trails for those who enjoy hiking. Nearby, easy walking paths with beautiful views lead almost to the summit of a small volcanic cone called Komezuka.

Besides the beautiful nature, near JR Miyaji Station, one stop from JR Aso Station, the gateway to Mount Aso, is Aso Shrine, which has a history spanning some 2,000 years. It features a two-story Romon Gate, one of the three largest of its kind in Japan. Inside, the shrine enshrines deities believed to be the founders of the town of Aso, along with a pine tree said to bring good fortune in love. It is a spot worth visiting whether you are single or in a relationship. Getting there is easy: simply get off at Miyaji Station, one stop after Aso Station, and walk about 20 minutes. Mount Aso is a varied destination well worth exploring, with plenty of other must-see attractions close by.
