Trip Overview
The concept is "close, easy, complete": leave Fukuoka in the morning, arrive in Kumamoto by late morning, stop for food and shopping in front of the castle, enter the paid castle area in the afternoon, and finish with evening shopping and dinner before heading back.
Getting There from Fukuoka
- Kyushu Shinkansen from Hakata Station
- Mizuho, the fastest, about 32 minutes

- Budget option: Express bus between Fukuoka and Kumamoto, about 2 hours. Get off at Sakuramachi Bus Terminal in the city center and walk to the castle area
Take the Tram into the City
Arrive at Kumamoto Station, then take the city tram to the Kumamoto Castle/City Hall（熊本城・市役所前） stop, about 20 minutes, for a fare of around ¥170 per ride. From the stop, walk up the path to the castle area right away.
Warm Up at "Sakuranobaba Josaien" & Must-Try Food
Note: The Wakuwaku-za Museum is closed because of the earthquake on July 28, 2026. It is expected to reopen around December 2026, so please check the official website before you go.
Sakuranobaba Josaien is a complex in front of the castle, combining souvenir shops, restaurants, and the Wakuwaku-za Museum (which tells the castle's history in a fun way).
- Approximate hours: The souvenir zone is open 09:00-19:00 (March-November) / 09:00-18:00 (December-February); restaurants are open around 11:00-19:00
- Local dishes to try:
- Taipien, a Kumamoto-style glass noodle soup with shrimp, pork, squid, vegetables, and a fried egg on top, light but well balanced
- Basashi, the prefecture's famous horse sashimi (if raw isn't for you, many shops also serve it grilled on a hot stone)
