The Daibutsu, also known as the "Great Buddha of Kamakura," is enshrined at Kotoku-in Temple. It is a very important symbol of Kamakura. It is considered the second-largest bronze Buddha statue in Japan, second only to the Great Buddha at Todai-ji Temple in Nara. The statue was originally housed inside a temple hall, but typhoons and a tsunami destroyed much of the building around the 14th and 15th centuries, and the hall was never rebuilt. Since then, the statue has stood in the open air. It is quite rare to see a Buddha statue standing majestically outdoors like this.
