Japan Fruit Calendar: What's in Season Each Month

Japan grows many kinds of fruit, and each season brings a different harvest depending on the region and climate. Early in the year is harvest season for strawberries, and prefectures like Chiba and Fukuoka are known for their large, sweet, crisp strawberries — some farms grow ones nearly the size of a palm. If you visit Hokkaido in summer, around June, be sure to try the Japanese melon, as the region is famous for melons that are sweet, fragrant, and full of flavor. Toward the end of the year, several fruits come into season, including apples, oranges, persimmons, and Japan's special yuzu citrus, which can be found in Tokushima Prefecture from around October through the end of the year.
