Kumamoto City's central shopping district (Kamitori, Shimotori, Sun Road Shin-shigai) is the most popular and largest shopping area in Kumamoto. It is the liveliest part of the city, with covered arcades running the length of the streets, letting you walk through comfortably. What makes this area so popular is that it isn't just one street, but a combination of three streets. These are Kamitori(Kamitori), lined with souvenir shops, gift shops, cosmetics stores, cafes, and many traditional Japanese restaurants; Shimotori(Shimotori), which has shops similar to Kamitori and leads straight to Shower Dori, where you can cross at the five-way intersection to reach the Shirakawa riverside, known for its beautiful night views; and Sun Road Shin-shigai(Sun Road Shin-shigai), which focuses on electronics shops, arcades, karaoke, pachinko parlors, pubs, bars, and hotels. This street connects with Shimotori and Shower Dori. Each street has its own charm and highlights, and together they form a compact shopping district that is a pleasure to explore on foot.
