Sapporo Beer Museum is a must-visit spot that beer lovers will definitely enjoy. Hokkaido is known as the birthplace of Sapporo Beer, Japan's oldest beer brand, and Sapporo is home to the oldest brewery and one of the most popular beer brands in the country. It has been brewing beer since 1877 and now exports worldwide. Here you can learn about a beer that is famous not only in Japan but around the world.
The Sapporo Beer Museum officially opened in 1987. The building was once a Meiji-era sugar factory, later a malt plant, and was later converted into the museum you see today. Inside, the museum introduces the history of beer in Japan and the beer-brewing process. The information and exhibits are detailed and well done, though there isn't much information in English. One thing many visitors will love is the paid beer tasting at the back of the exhibition. If you're tired from walking and want to sit down and relax, or the tasting portions weren't enough, you can walk over to the nearby Sapporo Beer Garden, which has two restaurants, Garden Grill and Genghis Kan Hall, offering a relaxed atmosphere for drinking beer and eating grilled lamb barbecue, a very popular local dish not to be missed.
