Tochoji Temple, also known as “Nangakuzan,” is one of the most notable temples in Fukuoka city. It is the head temple of the Shingon school of Buddhism in the Kyushu region and is also one of the oldest temples in Japan. The temple was built during the Heian period by the famous monk known as “Kobo-Daishi.” Another reason for the temple's fame is its seated wooden Buddha statue, which is 10.8 meters tall and weighing more than 30 tons. It is said to be the tallest wooden seated Buddha statue in Japan, widely known as the Fukuoka Daibutsu, or the Great Buddha of Fukuoka. The statue also took four years to complete, far longer than usual for a work of this kind.
