Todaiji Temple & Daibutsu of Nara

Todaiji Temple () is known by several names, commonly called the Great Buddha Temple of Nara or Daibutsu of Nara. It's not just famous in Nara Prefecture — it's considered one of the most famous and historically important temples in all of Japan. The main hall of the temple is the highlight you have to see. This wooden building is no ordinary structure — it's recognized as the largest wooden building in the world. And as large as it looks today, this building is actually only two-thirds the size of the original. Just imagine how magnificent it would be at its original size. Equally important, and held in great reverence by Japanese people, is the Great Buddha, or Daibutsu, enshrined inside the main hall. It's said to be the largest of its kind in Japan, standing as tall as 15 meters. Seeing it in person is sure to leave you amazed at its sheer scale.

This temple was built in 752. At that time, Todaiji Temple was considered the head of all temples in the country and was highly influential. To reduce the temple's role and influence over the government, the capital was moved from Nara to Nagaoka in 784. Another interesting and popular highlight is the giant wooden pillar, whose base is said to be the same size as the Great Buddha's nostril. Near the bottom of the pillar is a small opening, and it's believed that anyone who can crawl through it will attain enlightenment in their next life. At the entrance is a large wooden gate, with guardian statues standing watch on both sides. Another favorite, especially with young women and children, is the large number of deer wandering around. You can feed the deer with shika senbei, crackers made especially for them. They're easy to find — just walk around and you'll come across several shops selling them for about 150 yen per pack. This temple offers far more than a typical temple visit.
