Universal Studios Japan (USJ) Osaka

Universal Studios Japan (USJ) is the first Universal Studios theme park in Asia, opening with great fanfare in 2001. It's no ordinary park — its huge scale and eye-catching zones draw enormous crowds, making it the second most popular theme park in Japan, behind only Tokyo Disney Resort. The park is packed with thrilling rides, and queues can stretch for hours during holidays. If you're planning to visit, we recommend buying an Express Pass; otherwise, you could spend hours waiting in line instead of enjoying the park. Beyond the rides, there are shows, parades, and on some days special events with games and prizes for both kids and adults to enjoy. If you need more information once you're there, don't worry — you can always ask at the information counter. The park is divided into the following zones:

▌Super Nintendo World

Opened on March 18, 2021, this is the newest zone at USJ and the first of its kind in the world, built for Mario fans. This brand-new land is a dream come true for real Nintendo fans, with restaurants, snack stands, character greetings, shops, and plenty of interactive elements. To enter this zone, you'll need a day ticket (or annual pass) to Universal Studios Japan. If you do not have an Express Pass, you can enter Super Nintendo World with a free timed-entry ticket. There are two types: Area Timed Entry and Standby Entry.

▌The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

This hugely popular zone is a must-visit for many fans. Fans of the young wizard Harry Potter are sure to be amazed the whole way through — every corner here has been recreated from the films with incredible detail. Once you wander in, it's hard to want to leave, thanks to the fantastic photo spots. Hogwarts Castle alone will steal your heart, especially if you're a Harry Potter fan. It's even more magical at night, when the castle lights up beautifully. The zone also uses cutting-edge technology for extra spectacle, including crisp 4K screens that feel truly state of the art. And of course, don't miss the gift shop, packed with tempting souvenirs — the prices can be a bit steep, but at this point, who can resist?

▌New York

This zone recreates New York City, the setting of many famous films such as Spider-Man, and was home to the standout ride The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man (closed in January 2024). There was also a 3D theater here where kids could fully enjoy Spider-Man's heroics, immersed as if they've stepped right into the movie.

▌Hollywood

This zone brings a slice of Hollywood right into the park. Thrill-seekers can enjoy rides like Hollywood Dream the Ride, or if you'd rather experience a movie, there's a 4D theater offering a fully immersive, world-class sensory experience.

▌Jurassic Park

Anyone who's watched Jurassic Park has probably wished they could step into a world full of dinosaurs just like in the film. This zone won't disappoint — it's packed with dinosaurs of every kind, both herbivores and carnivores. Experience it all aboard the boat ride Jurassic Park: The Ride, and the thrilling roller coaster The Flying Dinosaur.

▌Minion Park

Before Super Nintendo World, this was the newest zone. It opened on April 21, 2017, replacing the former Back to the Future zone. It's a huge hit with both kids and adults thanks to the adorable, mischievous yellow Minions. The highlight is likely the Minion house, recreated in exact detail from the films. There's fun to be had throughout the zone, plus plenty of adorable premium merchandise.

▌Universal Wonderland

This is easily the favorite zone for little kids, bringing together beloved characters like the adorable Hello Kitty and the mischievous white dog Snoopy. The rides here are designed especially for children, and are about as cute as it gets. If you get tired of walking, there are restaurants and snack stands where you can sit and relax. Kids who come to this zone tend to want to stay a while.

▌Lagoon

If you grew up with Peter Pan and wondered what Neverland would look like in real life, this zone won't disappoint. You'll also get to enjoy an exciting show featuring Peter Pan and friends.

▌Water World

Anyone who's seen the movie Waterworld probably still remembers its over-the-top action, even though it's been years since it came out — it remains a favorite for many. This zone features a show that's just as thrilling and packed with action as the film itself, with genuinely impressive stunts.

▌Amity Village (Jaws)

You know the instantly recognizable music — it's from Jaws. This zone doesn't disappoint. It recreates the seaside town from the story, letting riders cruise past a giant shark that pops up with a heart-stopping jolt. You might get a little wet, but a rain poncho will keep you covered so you can enjoy the thrill worry-free.

Be sure to check the parade schedule, too. Every day there are shows and parades featuring beloved characters, bringing fun to visitors — Minions, Hello Kitty, Snoopy, and many more well-known characters make an appearance. Feel free to snap photos as souvenirs; kids and fans alike are sure to love it.

If you still haven't had your fill after touring the park, right outside is Universal Citywalk Osaka, a large shopping mall packed with stores. You'll find Universal Studios merchandise there too, though the selection may differ from what's sold inside the park. If you'd rather not hunt for souvenir shops, Citywalk also has local products and Osaka souvenirs for you to shop. If shopping isn't your thing and you'd rather explore something else, check out TAKOPA (Takoyaki Park, formerly the Osaka Takoyaki Museum) on the 4th floor of the mall. There's also a famous Osaka takoyaki shop there, so you can try the original recipe without having to hunt it down elsewhere. This is truly a comprehensive theme park, and one day might not even be enough. We recommend arriving early and planning your visit date carefully, since the park now shows crowd forecasts by day, so you can avoid the busiest times and enjoy your visit without the frustration of huge crowds.

2. 1.5-Day Studio Pass: A ticket valid for one and a half days, with entry from 15:00 on the first day
