★ 13:20 - 14:10 Visit Kumano Nachi Taisha

Start your spiritual journey by praying at Kumano Nachi Taisha, one of the three main Shinto shrines of the Kumano region and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route. The shrine sits on Mount Nachi, 350 meters above sea level, and its origins trace back to the ancient nature worship of Nachi no Otaki. Within the shrine grounds stands a camphor tree over 850 years old, considered a sacred tree. Visitors can walk inside its hollow trunk to pray for longevity and good health.

The highlight here is the shrine's vivid vermilion buildings standing out against the green mountainside. The shrine follows simple yet elegant traditional architecture, with Nachi Falls as its most important highlight. This is the tallest single-drop waterfall in Japan, at 133 meters high. From the viewpoint, you can admire the stunning sight of the waterfall standing beside the red three-story pagoda of Seiganto-ji Temple.

This shrine marks the end of the main Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route. Visitors can truly feel its sanctity and the tranquil atmosphere. On clear days, you can see the vast Pacific Ocean from the shrine grounds, making it an excellent spot for sightseeing and photography.

★ 13:20 - 15:05 See Nachi Falls

See one of Wakayama's highlights: Nachi Falls, the tallest single-drop waterfall in Japan at 133 meters, and one of Japan's three most famous waterfalls. It has been revered as sacred and worshipped since ancient times, enshrined as the deity of Hiro Shrine, part of Kumano Nachi Taisha. The waterfall lies within the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range" UNESCO World Heritage area.

The falls are about 13 meters wide at the crest. Its most iconic and beautiful angle shows the waterfall cascading down beside the red three-story pagoda of Seiganto-ji Temple, a popular photo spot that perfectly captures the blend of Buddhism and Shintoism.

There are viewpoints built for admiring the waterfall's beauty up close, especially near Kumano Nachi Taisha. The surrounding forest is kept lush by the falls, whose water is considered sacred and believed to cleanse the mind and bring good fortune to visitors.

Once you're back at Kii Katsuura Station, don't forget to collect your luggage from the locker. From there, we'll continue on to the ferry terminal.

Day 2: Pray at the Second World Heritage Shrine, Enjoy Nature and a Peaceful Atmosphere

Note: The jet boat cruise on the gorge stopped running on January 1, 2021. You can still see the gorge from the viewpoints.

This dramatic gorge was carved by the Doro River, a tributary of the Kumano River.

The Kumano River's clear emerald-green waters flow past towering rock cliffs on both sides. Looking out over this gorge feels like journeying into the heart of vast, peaceful nature. The view makes you feel as if you've stepped into another world, where all you hear is the sound of the water and the wind against the cliffs — a perfect experience for relaxing, letting go, and soaking in nature's pristine beauty.

The second shrine, "Kumano Hongu Taisha," is one of the three main Shinto shrines of the Kumano region (Kumano Sanzan) and part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage World Heritage site. The shrine enshrines deities said to bless safe travel, prosperity, family happiness, and happy marriages.

Admire the grandeur of "Japan's largest torii gate," standing 33.9 meters tall and 42 meters wide, a beautiful symbol marking the division between the secular and sacred worlds. Climb 158 stone steps lined with old cedar trees to reach the main shrine and offer your prayers.

Its main draw is the sunset, among the most beautiful in Japan. You can walk out onto the rock slabs jutting into the sea for an unobstructed view of the vast ocean. With its unusual rock formations and beautiful sea views, it's a popular spot for tourists who love photography.

Visitors can walk along the cliff to experience nature's grandeur up close and watch the waves crash against the rocks. This is also a popular rock-climbing spot for adventure lovers, and it's not far from Sandanbeki Cave, making it easy to plan your next stop.

★11:15 - 11:50 Explore Sandanbeki Cave

Sandanbeki Cave, another Wakayama landmark, lies beneath the Sandanbeki cliffs. This cave was once a secret pirate base. Today, visitors can descend by elevator 36 meters into the cave to see a museum recreating pirate life and marvel at fascinating natural phenomena — a memorable change of pace on the trip.

The highlight is the entrance itself — the descent into the cave is exciting, as you take an elevator from the top of the cliff down 36 meters in just 14 seconds. Inside, exhibits recreate pirate life with ships and tools of the trade. Deeper in, you'll hear waves thundering into the cave and see naturally formed stalactites and stalagmites up close. There's also a small shrine dedicated to a guardian deity, with a sacred well believed to have the power to wash away evil. The Sandanbeki cliffs offer beautiful views, with clear sight of the sea and the marks left by erosion from wind and waves.
