Yatai Food Stalls in Fukuoka

Yatai Food Stalls in Fukuoka

Yatai food carts are one of the highlights you shouldn't miss when visiting Fukuoka. Yatai stalls are mostly found around the southern part of Nakasu Island in the middle of Fukuoka, where more than 10 yatai stalls cluster together. This area is especially popular thanks to its riverside walkway, which has a great atmosphere, though you can also spot yatai stalls elsewhere around the city. In total, Fukuoka has around 100 stalls of this style. Yatai are a distinctive part of local culture: simple-looking stalls usually set up along the roadside, with fairly low prices and simple food. Yatai stalls typically seat only 6-10 people, so they are often a place people stop for a drink on their way home, or a casual meeting spot for a small group of friends.

The dishes most commonly sold at these stalls are simple local specialties, such as Hakata Ramen, a famous Fukuoka dish made with thinner-than-usual ramen noodles in a pork bone broth; Oden, a hot pot dish for anyone craving something warm and comforting; and, most commonly seen of all, Yakitori, grilled skewers that pair perfectly with alcoholic drinks. Most yatai stalls open in the evening and stay open late, roughly from 6 pm until as late as 2 am, though they may close earlier in bad weather. Opening hours vary, and most stalls close one day a week, usually Sunday. Crowds are especially heavy on Fridays and Saturdays, and at the more famous stalls you should be prepared for a long queue. As they say, if it's good, it's worth the wait. If you're visiting Fukuoka, don't miss the chance to try a yatai stall at least once. It's a way to taste authentic local food while experiencing a side of Fukuoka you won't find anywhere else.
