Getting to Know the Zao Ropeway
The Zao Ropeway is divided into 2 main sections:
- Lower Line (Zao Sanroku Line) - connects from Zao Onsen to Juhyokogen Station
- Upper Line (Zao Sancho Line) - takes visitors up to the summit at Jizo Sancho Station
The ropeway lets you enjoy sweeping mountain views, hike through nature, and, in winter, see the ice monsters up close.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?
▌Winter (December - March): Ice Monsters & Skiing
- The main highlight of winter is the ice monsters (Juhyo), formed by snow and ice clinging to trees
- Night illuminations are held, creating a fantasy-like atmosphere
- Nearby is Zao Onsen Ski Resort, suitable for both beginners and experienced skiers
▌Spring (April - June): Cherry Blossoms & Fresh Nature
- This is when trees begin to sprout new leaves and cherry blossoms start to bloom
- Great for walking and photographing natural scenery
- The weather isn't too hot, making for comfortable hiking
▌Summer (July - September): Hiking & Escaping the Heat
- The air is cooler than in the lowlands, great for escaping the summer heat of the city
- There are hiking trails up to see the Okama volcanic crater
- The mountain flower fields at this time are just as beautiful as in other seasons
▌Autumn (October - November): Fall Foliage
- The whole mountain turns brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow
- The ropeway takes you up for a bird's-eye view of the autumn foliage forest
