JR Kansai Wide Area Pass is sold exclusively to foreign tourists. It allows unlimited rides on JR trains (including Shinkansen and limited express trains, non-reserved seating) throughout the Kansai region, starting with the Haruka Express train from Kansai Airport into Osaka. It covers a fairly large area, spanning cities such as Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Nara, Okayama, Kinosaki Onsen, and Kumano. In other words, one pass is enough to cover the whole Kansai region and nearby areas on a single trip. If you travel between two or three cities, the pass already pays for itself, and if you move to a different city every day, it becomes even better value. For example, an itinerary of day trips from Osaka, with two days in Kyoto, one day in Kobe, one day in Nara, and one day in Kinosaki Onsen would cost far more in individual train tickets than the pass itself.
* The new post-pandemic JR Pass format is no longer a booklet that requires you to exit through the staff gate. Instead, it looks like a regular train ticket that you insert directly into the automatic ticket gates. Just remember to collect it from the gate on the other side.

- Unlimited rides on JR local and rapid trains.
- Unlimited non-reserved seating rides on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka Station and Okayama Station.
- Unlimited non-reserved seating rides on the HARUKA, KUROSHIO, THUNDERBIRD, KOUNOTORI, and SUPER HAKUTO limited express trains.
- Cannot be used on the Tokaido Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka Station and Tokyo Station.
- Cannot be used on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Okayama Station and Hakata Station.
- Cannot be used on the Kyushu Shinkansen between Hakata Station and Kagoshima-Chuo Station.
- This pass does not include seat reservations. An additional fee applies if you want to reserve a seat in advance.
- The pass validity is counted from midnight to midnight.
- This pass is available only to foreign tourists.
- The pass is non-transferable and tied to the individual holder; you must show your passport every time you travel.

Recommendation
The JR Kansai Wide Area Pass is ideal for travelers who want to visit Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, as well as Kinosaki Onsen, Okayama, and Kumano. It pays off if you travel between cities, though it comes in a 5-day version only.
Other Recommended Passes
The JR Kansai Area Pass also covers trains, subways, and buses in Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe, but is available for 1-4 day durations.
