JR West Rail Pass - Kansai Area is sold exclusively to international tourists. It covers JR trains and the Haruka limited express, usable starting from the airport, and it also covers several cities in the Kansai region, including Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe — all well-known cities with many attractions. If you're spending several days in Osaka and want to visit nearby cities, this pass suits you well.
* The new post-pandemic JR Pass format is no longer a booklet that requires you to pass through a staffed gate. Instead, it looks like a regular train ticket that you insert into the automatic ticket gate. Just remember to take it back from the machine.

Where to Buy:
- In Japan: Available for purchase at Tsuruga, Kyoto, Shin-Osaka, Osaka, Kobe, Shin-Kobe, Sannomiya, Himeji, Nijo, Uji, Saga-Arashiyama, Kyobashi, Tsuruhashi, Tennoji, Shin-Imamiya, Bentencho, Nishikujo, Kansai Airport, Nara, JR-Namba, and Wakayama stations.
- Outside Japan: Available through travel agencies, then exchange the Exchange Order for the actual pass at Kyoto, Shin-Osaka, Osaka, Sannomiya, Kansai Airport, Nara, or Wakayama Station.

How to Use:
- Unlimited rides on local JR trains in the Kansai region, including Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, Kansai Airport, and Himeji.
- Unlimited rides on the non-reserved seats of the Kansai-airport Express HARUKA.
- The 2-4 day passes must be used on consecutive days.
- Available only to international tourists.
- A reserved seat requires an additional ticket.
- Cannot be used on the Shinkansen (bullet train).
Tips
The JR West Rail Pass - Kansai Area isn't worth it if you only travel within one city, since a day of local train travel usually costs less than ¥2,060. However, it becomes very worthwhile if you travel between cities in the Kansai region, such as Osaka, Kyoto, Himeji, or Kobe. This pass also covers travel on the Haruka limited express to Kansai Airport, which is useful if you can't get an ICOCA&Haruka package. Note that the ICOCA&Haruka package is sold as a one-way or round-trip airport ticket (the round-trip ticket is valid for two weeks), and it's cheaper than buying a separate Haruka ticket.
Other Recommended Passes
The Kansai Thru Pass is the main competitor to this pass, as it's quite similar except it covers a different train network. It comes in 2-day and 3-day versions at similar prices, covering slightly more trains, subways, and buses in Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe, but it cannot be used on JR trains. If you want to cover an even wider area, there's also the JR KANSAI WIDE AREA PASS, valid for 5 days.
