Kinkaku-ji Temple is commonly known as the Golden Pavilion. The name comes from its main hall, which is covered in shining gold and stands elegantly above the water, casting a reflection that is just as beautiful. It has become one of Kyoto's most iconic landmarks. Locally, it is also known as “Rokuon-ji Temple,” meaning “Temple of the Deer Garden.” Thanks to its magnificent architecture, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
This temple was originally built as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and was used only to receive important guests. After his death, the residence was converted into a Zen Buddhist temple, becoming what is now Kinkaku-ji Temple. Its stunning beauty later inspired the design of Ginkaku-ji Temple, the Silver Pavilion, built by one of the shogun's sons.
The golden main hall near the temple entrance, with its garden reflected in the pond, is not the only highlight. Many other parts of the temple are just as fascinating. The temple's architecture is beautiful, and its tranquil grounds are laid out in traditional Japanese style, giving Kinkaku-ji Temple a charm all its own. Today it is hard to imagine that much of the building was once destroyed by arson in 1950. The current structure was rebuilt in 1955. So when you visit Kyoto, don't miss this golden pavilion — it is one of the city's true highlights.
